FBI episode 5 review: Maggie struggles with grief; a nuclear case

For those who wanted to see Maggie open up more about her past on FBI episode 5, the CBS series certainly provided that. Granted, it was heartbreaking in the process.

One of the biggest things that tonight delivered for us was a devastating conversation between Maggie and OA where she opened up about losing her husband and trying to deal with the deep pain of that loss. It doesn’t get any easier, and that may help to explain more why she is so devoted to her job. If it somewhat of a distraction from some of the other demons that are tossed around in her head.

As for the case itself, this one was absolutely dangerous and terrifying — it started with the murder of a safety inspector, and eventually led to a stand-off revolving around the nuclear power planet. There are few other places that everyone would want to steer clear from quite like this, mostly because it takes just one wrong move or simple mistake before almost everyone dies. A mission to extract a confession turned out to be so much more, and by the end of the episode some of the agents found themselves charging into the plant in order to ensure that nobody else was hurt.

While there was a major case at the heart of this episode, eventually it did all come back to Maggie being in a position where she had to help others channel some of their own grief, and also figure out how to keep fighting and moving forward.

CarterMatt Verdict

As a whole we would say that FBI is still delivering a great mystery every week, but hearing Maggie’s story and getting a window into her past is the most valuable thing that this hour tonight delivered — and really, it’s not even close. This was the window into her world that we’ve been waiting for, especially with the voicemail message at the end. The biggest problem with the show to date has been that it’s almost too procedural for its own good — especially during the early going, a series like this needs depth. At least many viewers have stuck around through the past month or so, and hopefully that commitment means that they will stay put into some more information is out there.
