The Rookie episode 2 video: The early highs and lows for John Nolan

Moving into The Rookie episode 2 on ABC tomorrow night, we may have a better opportunity to see just where John Nolan stands.

When it comes to his commitment to being an LAPD officer, we know that this is hardly something that is in question. He loves what he does, and he’s shown some genuine aptitude towards doing it. The problem that he may run into over time with it is just figuring out how to handle the social relationships, his nature to do the right thing even when the job doesn’t require it, and the people who don’t want him there. There are going to be people who want to break John down and keep the department from being a pace where people go in the midst of a mid-life crisis.

There is another larger component to this story with John that also needs to be explored on some level: His relationship with Lucy and what it means to the two of them. This is a bond that they formed leading up to arriving on the force and it definitely seems like they care about each other. Yet, how deep does this go? Do they see a real future there? Will we end up seeing them give it up for whatever reason? We know that some are going to encourage Lucy to do just that; we’re already seeing it.

The Rookie is striving to be at times a gritty police show giving you a sense of what real cops go through on a daily basis. Yet, there’s also still a little bit of comedy here. The challenge for the writers is simply figuring out how to toe the line between being a dark police drama and something a little more lighthearted; this also cannot feel like any other Nathan Fillion series we’ve seen over time.
