Doctor Who season 11 episode 3 expectations: The Rosa Parks story
After all, what we’re talking about here is the Doctor and the rest of her crew immersing themselves in history, heading back to the era of the Civil Rights Movement and Rosa Parks. Something is happening in that era that could dramatically change the timeline, and it is up to everyone to ensure that this doesn’t happen. This feels a lot like an episode of Timeless, and by no means are we upset with that.
The challenge for this episode comes with getting everything right and making sure that The Doctor helps without really insinuating herself into history. Everything Parks does should be of her own volition, and not because these characters inserted themselves into this world. You also want to present the environment as accurately as possible, which can also be rather challenging in its own right given that this is a show for younger audiences and this is very difficult subject matter.
Yet, the message here of equality is something that is universal and important — that is probably why Doctor Who is taking this particular story on. Regardless of where you are in the world right now, these are divisive times where harsh opinions and the internet have a tendency to create all sorts of toxicity. The Doctor is someone kind and reasonably wholesome — she brings about good in the world, even if her methods sometimes are a little unorthodox. Through her, Graham, Ryan, and Yaz, maybe they will present some messages that appeal to adults and children alike. If that happens, “Rosa” should be considered a rather-worthy experiment in the end. It may not work for everyone, but you could say the same thing about every single modern episode of the series.
