This Is Us season 3 episode 5 video: Toby’s despression battle is about to be painful

Going into This Is Us season 3 episode 5 on NBC Tuesday night, the series is going to do everything that it can in order to show that it can pivot.

At the end of this past episode, we were left to digest a lengthy history lesson into what happened with Jack Pearson back in Vietnam. What happened to him and Nicky there greatly informs some of the demons he battled the rest of his life, and that story also gave us a tiny clue that he may have actually died the way that he did even if there was no fire at all. Sometimes, things are just unfortunately meant to be.

We’ll still take some time to digest all things Jack, but moving into the next episode, we need to be prepared for almost all things Toby. This is going to mark an opportunity to fully get to know this character better, including what he went through as a child and his lengthy struggle with depression. He is off his medication, and there are a lot of different emotions that come with that. This is something that he thought he could clearly battle, but not, it doesn’t feel like that is the case. He stopped taking them for a particular purpose — something that he wanted. Yet, at the same time fighting for his family with Kate may have this unintended consequence now.

We’ve been waiting for the NBC series to deliver what could be the signature Chris Sullivan performance, and this episode may be providing that very thing. Toby has shown himself to be a great character, and he is certainly deserving of this time in the spotlight. Also, he has spent so much time being there for Kate that this is the time for the tables to turn, and for him to be the recipient of more attention and care. He’s going to need it, given that this is something that may not be fully resolved in a single day’s time.
