Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 4 sneak peek: Is Duke retiring?
After all, there’s a chance that Duke could retire and leave the force for good rather than endure the process for reinstatement. That’s something that Steve really wants for him, but it may not be something that Duke actually wants for himself. As he tells Steve, he’s finding a newfound sense of peace in his current situation. He enjoys spending the time at home and around his family, and he also doesn’t really care all that much about the way that he goes out. The way that he sees his situation at the moment is simply this: Everyone he cares about knows that he is a good cop, and that he did his all in order to put every fabric of his being into the job. In his mind, that’s really enough for him and he doesn’t need anything more. Getting back onto the force may bring him more work, but is it really something that he wants?

While there’s always a chance in this episode that Duke changes his mind and decides to get back on the force, there’s a reasonably good chance that this could be it and he’s at peace with it.
For the record, even if Duke does retire, it is by no means a guarantee that Dennis Chun is done with this series. Duke’s the sort of experienced guy who could always be called in as a consultant of sorts for Five-0, and they’ve certainly done their fair share of getting outside help before. Take, for example, the occasional time they used Jerry before he was officially brought on board … or even when they’ve used Kamekona. With his level of experience, he’ll always be in demand depending on what he wants to do. In the end, it seems like #1 on the list for him is simply to just relax and enjoy his life a little bit … and we absolutely do not blame the guy for that. He’s in paradise!
