Doctor Who season 11 premiere set new BBC milestone in ratings
Overall, the first episode of Jodie Whittaker’s reign as Doctor brought in approximately 10.9 million UK viewers, according to new figures via British organization Barb. These ratings include online viewings, and give you a much better overall sense of a show’s popularity.
What does this basically mean? When it comes to the Doctor Who premiere, we are effectively looking now at the most-watched premiere for a new Doctor ever since the BBC brought the series back after a long hiatus. It barely surpasses the launch with Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor, and it also surpasses the recent premiere of Bodyguard in order to become the most-watched premiere episode of a show this year, and the best launch for a season of a BBC series in over a decade.

Doctor Who season 11, no matter what happens from here, is a resounding success for the network and they have absolutely nothing in order to be upset about. If this sort of ratings trajectory stays reasonably close to where it is right now, the BBC will be singing the praises of Doctor Who for many more years to come. Remember that these ratings don’t even include the show’s launch in America, Australia, or many other places in which the series is incredibly popular. It has a global fandom all over the world that generates further income from the series.
Sunday night’s new episode (the third one for the season) could be another chance to bring in some more attention, given that this will feature The Doctor traveling back to the days of Rosa Parks. Trying to encapsulate a civil-rights icon on a lighthearted BBC adventure show is no easy feat, but we imagine that the network is going to find a way to pull it off.
