This Is Us season 3 episode 4 preview: The Vietnam story of Jack, Nicky
Much of the way that Jack is now on the series stems heavily from what he went through so many years ago in the country, with the largest shame here being that he had to go through losing someone in order to really understand some of the things that mattered the most to him.
Speaking via Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, here is what executive producer Dan Fogelman had to say on the subject of the story:
“The ironic part is we’ve always had this idea about Jack and Nicky and how they’re tied together as brothers and also how they were tied together during the war … But this also allows us to remain what the show is about, which is about family and the bonds that connect us as family members. This is an episode that explores what war does to a family, and how the sins of our fathers informs the sins of our sons and daughters. It’s about Vietnam, but at its core, it’s really about two brothers.”
There is something interesting about this story in that we know the end result of it already, but not so much the road to get there. The finer details of this episode could prove to be rather essential to establishing Jack emotionally, and this is also a road that Kevin may eventually go down as he starts to determine precisely what his father went through. That’s something he may be wrestling with right now in the aftermath of the movie role — he spent so long preparing for it, but never really considered along the way some of his father’s own experiences as background.
