Saturday Night Live cold open: Donald Trump, Kanye West (Chris Redd) talk this out

SNL

Going into this week’s Saturday Night Live cold open, the easiest assumption to make was that we were going to get some variation on Kanye West and Donald Trump, and for good reason. We have not seen Alec Baldwin as Trump this season; meanwhile, the Kanye spectacle made headlines all over the world. (There is some added humor that comes via the fact that Kanye was just on this show a mere matter of two weeks ago.)

So, did this assumption end up being reality? As it turns out, yes! Baldwin was back, and so was Kanye West — or, Chris Redd playing Kanye West. First, we’re thrilled that the show actually used a real cast member rather than a famous cameo. Second, Redd’s impression of Kanye was brilliant.

While we do think that Jay Pharoah did a great Kanye when he was on the show, there was something about Redd’s that had a different energy about him. He was funny and over-the-top, but he also figured out a way to actually feel like Kanye without actually looking all that much about him.

The basic message of this sketch was that Kanye was so out there, even Trump thought he was off his rocker. Also, Trump made a joke about Alec Baldwin being popular with minorities — basically, Baldwin making fun of himself. Also, let’s give the show some credit for not hanging on the sketch too long — they allowed themselves to move on to the rest of the show before it got too old.

Are we going to see Chris Redd as Kanye again in the future? With the rapper’s penchant for making headlines, you have to think that this is possible.
