The waiting is finally over, and Sunday, January 13 is officially the True Detective season 3 premiere date.

Today, HBO finally confirmed the good news on the crime anthology series, which is coming on the air after a rather-extensive delay. The second season proved itself to be both a critical and commercial disappointment, and after that time it felt like everyone involved needed to stop for a moment and take some sort of a breather. Now, everyone has and Nic Pizzolatto is ready to come back and deliver something that may meet some of the quality established in season 1.

We know that there is a good actor at the heart of the new season in Mahershala Ali, coming off of a recent Oscar win for Moonlight. The story itself is also intriguing, given that it is set over several decades and is located within the Ozarks. Unlike Netflix’s show Ozark, the third season of True Detective actually filmed in the region as a way to make things even more authentic. Most of the finer details are at the moment under a heavy lock and key, not that this should be all that much of a surprise at all.

More so than anything else, what we’re hoping for when it comes to True Detective season 3 is simply a chance to dive into what is a complicated and mysterious world with new riddles, characters, and themes. It should be a reflection of the era we live in, but also not something that expands too far beyond where it is and what it is. There is something fascinating about taking on this case at the local level and seeing, really from the ground-up, what some of these people go through. These are issues that are rooted in a very specific community, one that does not often get a great deal of attention.
