Magnum PI episode 3 sneak peek: Meet Detective Gordon Katsumoto

What to know what lies ahead when it comes to Magnum PI episode 3? For starters, Thomas Magnum may have a new adversary in Gordon Katsumoto.

Of course, by “adversary” we don’t necessarily mean archenemy. Detective Katsumoto (played by The Mentalist alum Tim Kang, one of the best character actors out there) is not a bad guy by any means. He wants to ensure that justice is served and that bad guys are off the streets. His methods are just different from Magnum’s, and it certainly doesn’t feel from this sneak peek below that he likes working with private investigators. He seems somewhat annoyed with his presence, and doesn’t want anyone of Magnum’s work (which seems a little personal this time around) interfering with any of his own cases.

Given that Kang is set to be a major part of the series going forward, it feels fair to say that Katsumoto is someone who you’ll be seeing a lot of on the series moving forward. It’s reasonably common for PIs to have some sort of overlap with local law enforcement, in this case HPD. We already know that his team is reasonably familiar with Noelani from the pilot, and while it doesn’t seem like Magnum knows Steve McGarrett or Danny Williams at the moment, that could change as time goes along. (Show executive producer Peter M. Lenkov confirmed to CarterMatt recently that there are plans to potentially do a Hawaii Five-0 – Magnum PI crossover should the latter series get a back nine order.)

Based on what we’re seeing here, Magnum PI is a show brimming with potential to get better and better every week. We already feel like last week’s episode was a nice step up from the pilot, and shows like this tend to improve as the cast gets increasingly better chemistry over time.
