Star Trek: Discovery season 2 premiere date revealed; new trailer
Today, CBS All Access confirmed while at New York Comic-Con that new episodes of the series will start streaming weekly starting on Thursday, January 17. The first season of the show streamed on Sundays, and we feel as though the big reason for the change here is mostly to ensure that the series avoids competition from the NFL / other major events that are on Sundays for the first two months of the year.
Is this an exciting development? Absolutely, especially since season 2 of Discovery is really taking a pretty bold approach to some of its storytelling by bringing on board more iconic characters from within the Star Trek world, whether we are talking about Christopher Pike or Spock. At the end of the new trailer below, you can get a glimpse of the new version of Spock, who is being played here by Ethan Peck. We certainly feel for the challenge that lays at his feet, given that he is effectively taking on one of the most noteworthy roles in the history of science fiction.
Visually, the new trailer is all sorts of stunning, but we cannot really say that this surprises us in the slightest. The questions that we have relate more to whether or not the series can match this excellent aesthetic with a story that matches it from start to finish? We want to see something that pushes the envelope slightly and brings about stories that translate to the real world. We also felt as though the original series were transcendent in that way; they spoke to so much more than just an adventure in outer space featuring characters who you could know, love, and aspire to be like.
