Shameless season 9 episode 5 video: Fiona, Geneva clash over Ian
Going into this particular episode, it’s clear that the Gay Jesus movement is overwhelming everything when it comes to this character. There are a number of people who look at Ian as some sort of inspirational figure, and this leads to a clash between Geneva and Fiona over what exactly Ian should be doing when it comes to a prison sentence. If he pleads insanity in his case, there’s a chance that he could have a much smaller sense — after all, Ian does have some mental-health issues including bipolar disorder. He also has the tools in order to prove this to the court.
Here’s the problem with this — Geneva isn’t having it, mostly because if Ian goes through with this plan, the Gay Jesus movement is suddenly damaged. All of a sudden, the inspirational figure loses some of his luster because some of his behavior could be ascribed to a condition. She thinks that Ian’s story is bigger than anything else in his life, including family … and that sets off Fiona.
The saddest part about this sneak peek (albeit sad in a rather funny way) is that Ian’s lawyer really doesn’t even get a chance to speak out here at all. He mostly is just left to sit there while Geneva and Fiona go toe-to-toe. Therefore, we don’t really get a very clear picture of what precisely Ian wants in this situation, and that’s something that is going to be very important to figure out for the sake of the future of the story.
Maybe we’ll get some resolution on the Gay Jesus storyline soon; personally, we hope so given that this is one of the more polarizing things that Shameless has put on the air in a little while. Some people like the story, but plenty of people wish that Ian was dealing with something else.
