Arrowverse crossover with Batwoman lands ‘Elseworlds’ title
Today, The CW confirmed this news while also sharing the first poster for the upcoming crossover event, which is going to begin on December 9 and carry through to December 11. The Batwoman version of the bat-signal is referenced here, and we’re certainly excited to see what Ruby Rose brings to this role.
Filming has yet to begin on the crossover, but clearly the network doesn’t want to miss out on an opportunity to promote this. As for what Elseworlds is a reference to, within the DC Comics universe it basically means comics that either took place outside the main canon or as what-if scenarios. Eventually, some of these stories were folded in alternate Earths, so don’t assume that this title is a sign that Batwoman and her story doesn’t matter to the rest of the Arrowverse. (Fun fact: At one point, Superman: Red Son was considered an Elseworlds story. That is serving as an inspiration for at least one part of Supergirl season 4.)
We do take this title as a sign that there version of Batwoman a.k.a. Kate Kane may not exist on the same Earth as some of the other shows. After all, she has never been referenced, though there have been some nods to Bruce Wayne in the past on Arrow. We think that if she exists somewhere within the world of an established show, it’s likely to be Supergirl given that this would give Kara Danvers more of a natural crossover partner. It also does seem like the crossover is reasonably Supergirl-focused given that you will get a chance to see Superman and also Lois Lane over the course of it. (Granted, we are still left to wonder whether or not it’s the right move to put Batwoman in the same world as over-powered aliens.)
