Following its premiere on Netflix today, is it possible that a Maniac season 2 renewal could happen on the streaming service in the future?
The first thing that you should note here is rather simple: Maniac, which stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, is a weird and at-times gloriously dark tale of two wayward characters who somehow manage to find each other in the midst of a pharmaceutical trial. There haven’t been too many other shows out there quite like it, and because of that it has certainly received a number of positive reviews.
With this being said, we should also note that there is no guarantee at the moment that there is ever going to be more of the series — largely due to the fact that this was originally billed as a limited-series project. While we’ve certainly seen many other shows shed that label and eventually get another season, it’s almost not something that every limited series should follow. Sometimes, things really are better when you know when to let go. This isn’t something that every single limited series out there wants to follow, but this is certainly valuable for those who actually do bother to pay attention and not prioritize their bottom line.
Speaking in a new interview with Business Insider, director Cary Fukunaga did make it clear that in the event the show returns for more in the future, he’s not going to be a part of it. Instead, he has every intention in the world of trying to move forward:
“For me, I like to do one and move onto something else … I’d be very happy if another season were to happen, but I think they were just thinking about this as a limited season and if there’s an appetite for another one then I think [show creator] Patrick [Somerville] would be happy to take it up and do it again. But not with me.”
