Saturday Night Live season 44 premiere: Adam Driver hosting; Kanye West performing

Saturday Night Live review

If there are two words that we would use in order to describe the upcoming Saturday Night Live season 44 premiere, it would be these: “Mixed bag.” It’s hard to get tremendously excited about what we’ve just learned.

NBC has confirmed that former Girls star / current Star Wars icon Adam Driver is going to host the upcoming September 29 premiere, and with that, he will be joined by none other than Kanye West as musical guest. Kanye has been a musical guest many times over, but this is certainly one of the most contentious times in which he has appeared — not so much for his political beliefs, but in light of him saying slavery was “a choice.” He apologized for the remark, but still this is the sort of hire that is going to draw ire from many. Then again, this is a way for the show to demonstrate that they are open to people of differing opinions, especially at a time in which they have been criticized for leaning too liberal and shutting off other points of view. West has long had a good relationship with the show, which has embraced him after other controversies in the past.

As for Driver hosting, this is a gig he should be rather familiar with after having done so in the past. He was solid on his first outing, and we do think that with his extensive theater background he is a solid choice for the first show. It’s still somewhat surprising given that this is an opportunity to bring on someone who had a great summer in either movies or TV. We would’ve been happy, for example, to see someone from Infinity War or Crazy Rich Asians take the gig — the latter would have felt especially appropriate given how recent and insanely popular it was.
