Emmys 2018: Should Peter Dinklage, Matt Smith, someone else win Supporting Actor?

Emmys 2018

The 2018 Primetime Emmys are airing on NBC come Monday, September 17, and we’re starting to take a look ahead at the categories! We want to do our best here to not only analyze the field, but also figure out just what shows will and should emerge as the champion.

For this particular article, we’re putting the focus on Supporting Actor in a Drama Series! This is a fairly interesting category just because, perhaps more so than any other we’ve spotlighted to date, it feels reasonably hard to predict. It may be the actor who has the most notoriety; or, it could just be the actor on the hottest show at the moment. It’s hard to really no precisely which way the voters are going to go here.

At the end of this article, there is a poll for who you think should take home the trophy — after we get through our own analysis, of course.

Voting Rules – Vote however often you like! We’ll announce all reader predictions at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time on September 17, leading up to the start of the awards.

The nominees

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones

Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones

Joseph Fiennes, The Handmaid’s Tale

Mandy Patinkin, Homeland

David Harbour, Stranger Things

Matt Smith, The Crown

Who should win

If we’re just looking at things in terms of the strongest overall performance, it’s hard to go against Matt Smith here for his work as Prince Philip. He was fantastic and managed to be a perfect counterpoint with Claire Foy. We’d probably lean in his direction, but it would be nice to see Coster-Waldau eventually get some love for Jaime Lannister, one of the morally-complex and difficult characters in the entirety of the Game of Thrones world. In a lesser actor’s hands, maybe this character does not come across as anywhere near as interesting or morally divided.

Who will win

If we’re thinking in terms of the show the Emmy voters love the most, the easiest assumption to make is that Fiennes will win — he is extraordinary, and he is also a part of a fascinating and socially-relevant show. Dinklage would probably be our #2 prediction just because of the popularity of this character and also Tyrion over the course of the entire show’s run. Patinkin is great, but Homeland doesn’t get the love that it often deserves at this point in its run.

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you are on mobile, scroll to the bottom of the page and click to view the non-AMP version. If that does not work, give the poll a moment to load! On some mobile browsers, it may take a moment.

How can I vote more than once? – If you are having trouble casting multiple votes, try switching your browser, your device, or visiting the page under private browsing or incognito mode. There should be many handy guides online explaining how to do so if interested.
