Gotham season 5 finale: The early stages begin

Gotham

While nobody may be prepared for the Gotham season 5 finale — seemingly the last episode of the series ever — it may be time to face reality that it is right around the corner.

In a new post on Twitter (which you can check out below), show executive producer John Stephens confirmed on Friday morning that he has officially started to write the final episode, which will air on Fox in 2019. The challenge when it comes to this episode feels clear: You have to end the series in a way that offers up some hope that, at least at some point down the line, you’re going to see Bruce Wayne formally become Batman. This is a game-changing moment in the series and, of course, a game-changing moment for the character. We’ve seen him work towards something greater for the entirety of the series run and it’s crazy to think that we are now getting to the point where this journey can be close to complete.

There is no title for this episode just yet, but Bruce’s story is not the only one in need of closure. Over the course of this episode, we also feel like there are going to be opportunities to wrap up the narratives of a number of other key players — at least through the Gotham lens. You’re going to have a chance here to get more about how Nygma fully becomes the Riddler full-time, how Oswald remains immersed in power, or how Jim Gordon ends up eventually getting on the road to Commissioner (and maybe that famous mustache!). These are people who obviously live on past the end of this season, but through Gotham, we’re getting a better sense of how their stories make sense and that is exciting.
