The Flash will have new Pop! figures; Candice Patton points out key omissions

Leading up to The Flash season 5, the folks over at Funko are unveiling some new Pop! figures — and some of these look like they will be especially fun!

Yet, is there also some controversy out there? We certainly think so. Today, Funko announced that figures for Vibe, the most-recent iteration of The Flash, Kid Flash, and Jay Garrick would be coming out. Nobody’s going to argue about the popularity here — superhero Pop! figures sell well, and introducing three speedsters is a great way to get those sales.

Here’s where the issue comes up, and it’s something that Candice Patton smartly addressed on Twitter (which you can see below). There are a ton of female characters on this show with powers too, included Caitlin (who has been in more episodes than Kid Flash and Jay Garrick combined), Jesse Quick (another speedster), Cecile (who developed powers last season), and also Gypsy. There really should be two different Pop! figures out there for Iris — one where she’s a reporter and one with her in her speedster costume from last season. Maybe you make one a special edition since Funko has done that sort of thing in the past, but we certainly think that there are plenty of Iris fans — or fans of any of these female characters — who would appreciate adding to their collection. You could also easily argue that there should be two separate ones for Caitlin — one for her, and one for Killer Frost. Given that all of these characters are superheroes, it already meets the sales criteria.

To date, most of the earlier Flash Pop! figures have been iterations of the same mold, including Barry Allen, the Reverse-Flash, and Zoom. We’ve also seen a super-sized figure of Gorilla Grodd and also one for Captain Cold, both without his hood and with it. We mostly don’t understand why Funko often releases such limited runs of some of their figures since it almost always leaves characters out — this time around, the omissions are just more glaring than usual because of the demographics. As Funko collectors ourselves a good 3/4 of our collection are female Funkos including Power Girl, Harley Quinn, Daenerys, and Lady Sylvanas just to mention a few of our favorites. We would happily add an Iris Funko to our shelf!
