Insatiable season 2 renewal official at Netflix, even after controversy

Insatiable

Even though Insatiable may be one of the most polarizing series ever made by Netflix, the streaming service is nonetheless rather happy with what they have — after all, they have just picked up the series for a second season.

This news comes many weeks after the Debby Ryan revenge show first premiered, which led at the time to mixed reviews and questions as to whether or not the series was sending the wrong message about body image. The defense of the series has been that it is satire of vapid, shallow people and it is meant to just be for entertainment.

Ultimately, what the renewal signals is that Netflix is courting the controversy and that on some level, they actually are rather grateful that they have it. They like having shows that generate conversation and this renewal is really just one example of that. Another one can be found with their commitment to keeping 13 Reasons Why going even though Hannah Baker’s story is over, which some feel presents a complicated view of suicide. These shows are edgier and different than the usual teen fare, and it is in part because of this that you are seeing such a strong, divided reaction to them still being around. It’s not so much about getting the vast majority of Netflix subscribers to like them, but instead, it’s about carving out a small-but-loyal niche audience. If a series like Insatiable can do that, what it effectively is achieving is getting an audience that will stick around for many more years to come. It doesn’t really matter so much what anyone else thinks.

Based on the timing of this announcement, our feeling at the moment is that you are going to see Insatiable season 2 premiere at some point in 2019. The show is getting renewed early enough that the writers should have plenty of time to come up with more stories.
