Empire season 5 premiere will feature a time jump, rebuilding family
The most important thing to know going into this episode is that there will be a big time jump. Two years will have passed since the end of season 4, and in that time we are going to have an opportunity to see where Cookie and Lucious are in their lives now. They have each other, but they may not have a whole lot else. The company is gone and much of the family is now splintered apart.
In some ways, season 5 is going to offer up a chance of real redemption for these characters — that way if they ever do repair and rebuild, they can go about things a different way. They’ll have a life that is now more about whatever they think is best for themselves, and they can avoid some of the mistakes from their past.
Rest assured, though — Empire is still Empire. No matter what happens, there is always going to be drama in some shape or form that manifests itself. This show wouldn’t be the same otherwise.

Two years after losing Empire to Eddie Barker (guest star Forest Whitaker), Cookie and Lucious are still in the midst of picking up the pieces. The family is now completely dispersed and coping in their own ways after experiencing unimaginable tragedies. Meanwhile, in an effort to reclaim the Lyons’ position in the music industry, Cookie sets her eyes on a talented new singer and rapper, Treasure (guest star Kaitlynn Simone) in the all-new “Steal From The Thief” Season Five premiere episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, Sept. 26 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
