Ballers renewed for season 5 by HBO; Insecure renewed for season 4

If you love Ballers and Insecure, the news that we’ve got for you today is certainly going to be up your alley.

Today, HBO officially greenlit the two comedies, which respectively star Dwayne Johnson and Issa Rae, for a fifth and fourth season. These two shows are very different, but they’ve still been thought of as a unit for a long time; they’ve aired back to back for years and they’ve established some solid numbers airing next to each other. Yet, the majority of their viewership comes after the fact in delayed viewing. They are a perfect part of today’s modern viewing climate where people choose to watch shows whenever they choose to do so.

You can see Rae’s message about the Insecure renewal below.

So how long can these two shows last? We do wonder this just because Johnson and Rae are both going to continue to be in-demand, with Johnson as a performer and Rae as a writer-performer who can wear a number of different hits. Yet, we do think what at least benefits Johnson with Ballers is that it offers him a chance to work from Los Angeles, where he’s centrally located, and be around his family for at least a few months of the year. That’s not always possible with some of his film work. Rae’s schedule on Insecure is a little more demanding (or a lot more demanding) behind the scenes with some of her writing work.

While we don’t think either one of these shows is going to last forever, as no series on HBO tend to, we’re hoping for at least a couple more years of each. For the time being, we do think that there is certainly enough story to tell to make that happen.
