Following tomorrow’s season 2 premiere on Netflix, what are the Iron Fist season 3 renewal odds going to be? Are there reasons for optimism when it comes to the series?
When you think about the simple fact that this is another edition of the Marvel – Netflix universe, you have to feel reasonably confident that it will be back for more. To date, we haven’t seen any show in this world get canceled, and that’s with there being some uneven seasons between all of them so far. Iron Fist did get off to a rockier start than Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, as many reviewers weren’t kind to the first season. However, it was appreciated more by fans, and early reviews of season 2 have to date been a little bit more favorable. That does have us reasonably hopeful that the Finn Jones series is going to deliver in terms of strong viewership at Netflix.
As we explain in the video below (be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more), there is no exact science when it comes to how Netflix operates with the ratings. They don’t release viewership information publicly, but the typical factors they tend to look for are total viewership, retention from one episode to the next, and there being a relatively quick demand to finish the season. If you’re waiting six months to watch a show of theirs, that doesn’t help its renewal odds all that much. It’s not necessarily about binge-watching a show in one weekend, but they want to know that watching a program is a reasonable priority for you.
We do imagine that we’ll hear about an Iron Fist season 3 at some point by the end of the season. For those who are curious, there still isn’t any word on a season 2 for The Defenders and honestly, we’d be shocked if that happens. It makes less sense for Netflix to slow production on all four individual shows so that they can make a project featuring all of them together. Also, The Defenders wasn’t really altogether worth the hype from our point of view.
