Suits season 8 episode 8 review: Samantha’s past; Gretchen’s big story

Suits season 8 episode 2

Tonight, Suits season 8 episode 8 offered up the most substantial history lesson for Samantha Wheeler to date. After all, over the course of “Coral Gables” we learned that years ago, the character intentionally hid some evidence — and she was in a dangerous spot now as some of her past was coming back.

What was great about this case in some ways was that it offered us up a really great opportunity in order to understand some more of Samantha’s loyalty and the things that she apparently holds dear — if someone screws over Robert Zane, she takes it as an equal affront. That’s why she fought so hard for vengeance and also to ensure that those she cared about are protected. She found herself threatened, but the funny thing about Samantha is that she’s exceptional at getting out of almost every situation.

Meanwhile, tonight also brought on one of the most-substantial personal stories that we’ve had a chance to see for Louis Litt to date, largely because it turned out that one of the people who could best help up Sheila was a grown-up version of Chaz, his childhood bully. He was forced to endure some of that trauma tonight, but at the same time also recognize that he needed to find a way to move forward and not have to face the fear in the same way anymore.

How this story was wrapped up tonight was beautiful, as Stan helped Louis navigate his past to better understand that there’s always been a brave part of himself. Consider this yet another reminder that Rick Hoffman remains one of the most underrated actors of the past decade; how in the world has he not been nominated for an Emmy Award just yet? We don’t quite get that.

Finally, this episode was one of the best ones to date for Gretchen … but also one where her job history came into question over a move that could cost the firm a client. We know that she’s exceptional at her job, but she’s also in a world where many other people are either younger or more disrespectful than her. What a lovely tribute this story was for this character, even if it was for the most part fairly short in comparison to other arcs. She didn’t retire, but there were certainly some concerns that this could be the case.

CarterMatt Verdict

Tonight, Suits brought you a powerful episode with some great performances — including one of the best showcases that we’ve seen for the Gretchen character we’ve seen. We just wish that it didn’t come at the potential expense of a character like Gretchen, who found herself contemplating her future.
