Bodyguard ratings surge in consolidated figures; season 2 near-given

Bodyguard episode 4

While a Bodyguard season 2 is not 100% official at the moment over at BBC One, it’s starting to become more and more of a sure thing. It’s getting rather hard to envision a scenario in which this show does not come back for another batch of episodes with how well the show is doing.

The first extended, consolidated viewing figures are in for the Richard Madden – Keeley Hawes series, and with that, we’ve learned that more than 10 million people watched the first episode. To be more specific, 10.4 million viewers have seen the premiere, and that is the most for a series premiere of a new UK drama since 2006. That’s an enormous total and something that is very much worthy of a celebration!

Now that we’ve said this, you do also have to wonder just how much bigger this show can really go. Can it hit the 12 million mark? We certainly think that it’s possible given that the ratings to date for the series have remained incredibly steady. This is the rare British drama series that seems have united multiple different audiences — there’s an element of soap to this story, but there are also components of a strong political thriller.

Really, the biggest question to wonder is how quickly a season 2 is going to get a green light? We do think that the renewal is going to be coming sooner rather than later … but there is no guarantee that it will be a similar show when it returns. We wouldn’t be shocked if a different politician is at the center of it rather than Julia Montague; one of the things about British dramas is that they tend to be a lot more flexible than some of their American counterparts when it comes to casting switch ups.
