Fall TV Preview: Will Mayans MC be worthy Sons of Anarchy follow-up?

With us now officially in the month of September, it feels like the perfect time to kick off our Fall TV Preview series!

We’re kicking things off today with FX’s Mayans MC, a show that is actually premiering in just over 24 hours! This show is the much-anticipated follow-up to Sons of Anarchy. It’s set within the same world, but takes place many years after the saga of Jax Teller came to a close. Some of the themes are the same, whether it be family, the effects of violence on a community, and also (per show co-creator Kurt Sutter) the lives of people who choose to live on the fringe of society.

The lead for the new series is JD Pardo as EZ Reyes, a new Prospect and a guy who, at one point in his life, seemed to be on the up-and-up. He was getting a great college education but, due to a certain series of events, found himself going to prison instead. He tries to escape a certain life of danger, but eventually, he finds himself pulled right back in.

The expectations for this series are going to be through the roof thanks mostly to the original series’ success, and we know that there are going to be many people who watch it expecting a ton of Sons of Anarchy Easter eggs. We wouldn’t go into it with that expectation. Instead, we would say to enter the series thinking more that this is its own series and standalone story. There will be some ties to the original that come up over time most likely, but this isn’t meant to exist just on the shoulders of what came before.

Should you watch? – Certainly, though we would caution you that sometimes, it takes shows in this sort of spin-off / follow-up mode a few weeks to really get going. Mayans MC will bring you some of the feelings that you once had with Jax and SAMCRO, but in its own style and with its own family. It’s a worthy continuation of the story and even if you weren’t a Sons of Anarchy savant, there is still quite a bit to enjoy about this new project.

Be sure to check out Mayans MC starting on September 4.
