The Affair season 5 endgame series: What’s the best conclusion for Cole?

The Affair season 4 episode 4

Let’s start this off this article by noting, once more, that The Affair season 5 is not coming onto Showtime until 2019 at the earliest. It is a really long wait, and we’re already trying to mentally brace for that.

Yet, throughout this hiatus we do want to stay concentrated on the series and some of the characters involved — especially knowing that season 5 is the last one for the show. That’s why we are here today discussing endgames, and it’s something that we plan to keep doing in the weeks to come for most of the characters.

Given that Joshua Jackson is coming off of one of his best seasons, doesn’t it make some sense to focus in part here on Cole? We like to think so, and that’s precisely why we are doing so here. In this particular article, we’ve come up with a few different suggestions as to how he can really start to move forward and repair his life after losing Alison, and also learning that his relationship with Luisa is effectively done.

1. Start letting things go – It certainly felt like one of the things that Cole was struggling with the most after the death of Alison was that there were things he could’ve done better and ways he could’ve listened and been there more. He clearly loved her, but eventually he does need to realize that he did the best he can. He’s not a perfect person and that’s okay. We don’t think he should spend the rest of his life feeling sorry about everything that happened.

2. Resolve his business – Over the course of season 4, the storyline revolving around The Lobster Roll got a little bit buried, and understandably so, given everything else that was going on. Moving into this season, we now have a chance to see all of this explored more in earnest and we definitely do want to know what his business future is — remember, he doesn’t have to be extremely successful to be happy.

3. It’s not all about romance – Cole is a guy who has been defined a lot by his relationships on the series and chasing what is at times a perception of what love should be. We don’t think that it benefits him to spend season 5 chasing ideals. We want to see him more focusing on himself so that if he does find love, even if it is after the show concludes, there are chances that he could actually enjoy it.
