Bodyguard episode 3 expectations: Will David find his footing?

Bodyguard episode 4

Are you ready for Bodyguard episode 3 to come on the air this weekend?

At the moment, it’s pretty clear that BBC One has themselves an enormous hit in the Richard Madden series. The ratings for the second episode were almost even to the premiere, and we’ve seen the story of David Budd escalate in some shocking ways. After episode 1, the last thing that we ever expected was for things between David and Home Secretary Julia Montague to become romantic. Yet, here we are and his life is even more complicated than ever. He has pressure to rise against her controversial beliefs, but yet the two have a romantic relationship now that could alter his view towards her. If nothing else, there is a vulnerability that is now here; he may be more loyal to her than any other normal bodyguard would be in his position.

Unfortunately, David’s problems as a protector are far from over, mostly because Julia seems to be intent on doing whatever she can in order to continue to further her career. That’s going to create so much more of a challenge for him since the more noteworthy she is, the more she is a target — and she’s already been a target. The synopsis below reflects that:

As the capital shudders in the wake of two terrorist attacks, specialist protection officer PS David Budd is more under pressure than ever to keep the home secretary Julia Montague safe. The threat to her life does nothing to curb Julia’s political ambitions, as her counterterrorism bill takes another step towards being made law, provoking political rivalries.

With the police marginalised from the investigation into the attacks in favour of the security service, David is caught between his new-found loyalty to Julia and his superiors’ demands for intelligence on her activities.

David’s job effectively is demanding information from him; yet, his heart may not feel entirely the same. There is a genuine soap element to this story, but it’s wrapped up in so much intensity and intrigue at this point that it works. It doesn’t feel cheesy, and that was the risk the show really took the moment that the pushed the relationship in a romantic direction.
