The Gong Show season 3 renewal: Will it happen at ABC after finale?

The Gong Show

Following tonight’s season 2 finale, is there a chance at a The Gong Show season 3? Is that something worth crossing your fingers over, or is the game-show more likely to get the gong itself?

Back when the series was renewed for a second season, it was largely considered at that point to be a bubble show in its own right. While the original version of this series was a runaway hit many decades ago, it’s a pretty different climate and world in 2018. It’s harder for a show like this to capture a huge audience when there are a ton of different viewing options out there for people and with America’s Got Talent also airing it’s not easy to compete.

With that, it doesn’t appear as though there’s all that much of a chance The Gong Show comes back for more this time. This is a show that is averaging just a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down by more than 20% versus the season 1 averages. While the show is actually up in live total viewers versus the first season, we think that the demo here is really what matters most. It’s also pacing behind a number of other ABC game shows.

While we do think that there’s benefit in The Gong Show in that it doesn’t require a lot of promotion, it also isn’t going to create many viral moments for itself, either. It’s mostly just a summer fill-in programming at this point and there may be plenty of other ways ABC can find this for a little less money.

Ultimately, the network does have a little bit of time to solidify a decision here, given that The Gong Show as a series wouldn’t air again until next summer and it doesn’t require that much time to cast and film — it’s a shorter turnaround than a big-budget drama series that needs to write episodes before going out there and film. We just wouldn’t hold your breath to see celebrities gong random acts again.
