Lethal Weapon alum Clayne Crawford gets very candid on dismissal, more

Lethal Weapon season 2 episode 6

Ever since his firing from Lethal Weapon earlier this year, Clayne Crawford has kept pretty quiet about the situation. This week, that officially changed.

In a new interview on the Drinkin’ Bros podcast, Crawford (who played the character of Martin Riggs on the series) disputed aspects of stories that are out there over on-set incidents leading to his exit — including many that were recounted in Variety. He made it clear that some information was accurate, whether it be having to attend anger management or him having to pay half of his salary back after using explicit language towards an assistant director. He recounted some of the humiliation he felt over having to be escorted to and from set by security.

Beyond that, Crawford also noted that after his second on-set incident (which involved his co-star Damon Wayans) he met with Warner Bros. TV head Peter Roth, who wanted him to issue a public statement:

“He said, ‘Clayne, I can’t promise you that I can save your job, but what I can tell you is that you have to make a public announcement apologizing, publicly, to Damon Wayans.’ I was like, “What the fu—? Peter, why would I apologize publicly because he and I had a riff on set?’ And he’s like, ‘Clayne, that statement alone tells me you don’t want to come back… If I were you, I’d look your children in the eyes, and I’d look your wife in the eyes, and you need to make a decision.’”

One other performer on the set spoke anonymously to TVLine, and characterized Crawford as a great actor who was not difficult to work with; he just had a different energy and style than Damon, who was used to sitcom schedules rather than an hour-long series.

In the end, our feeling about Lethal Weapon and the whole Clayne situation as a whole is the same as it’s always been — basically, we just think that there are always going to be differing opinions and the odds are pretty low that anything is ever going to be really resolved here. If anyone wants to stop watching the show because Clayne is no longer on it, it’s hard to blame them for feeling that way; yet, it’s just as understandable if people want to keep watching and are invested in the series as a whole.
