Should NCIS season 16 episode 2 contain a larger time jump?

Earlier this week, we got a good sense as to what’s coming on NCIS season 16 when the show premieres September 25. We are going to see a time jump of about a month as Gibbs and the rest of the team search for Vance following his exit. With this, Gibbs is going to get a promotion (at least temporarily) to lead the investigation.

For the sake of this article, let’s look a little bit beyond this. Is it possible that episode 2 could contain some sort of larger time jump? After all, at some point we anticipate that the show is going to be caught up to the present so that they can tell stories in line with what’s going on in the real world. For example, the writers are probably going to want to do a Halloween episode and they’re not able to do that without pushing the story forward.

Ultimately, episode 2 makes sense as to the perfect time to do it. The premiere episode, if it’s like many other premieres in the past, will probably do everything that it can in order to resolve the cliffhanger. After that, there’s a chance to move forward to take on some new challenges.

Yet, we do think that there is a case to be made for NCIS to actually do something a little bit different here. Namely, we think that there’s an opportunity to do one or two episodes in the aftermath of the premiere. If Vance is found, wouldn’t this be a great chance to dive more into his story and see how he’s doing? It’s definitely an opportunity to give Rocky Carroll some great material. If for whatever unfortunate reason he doesn’t make it, this is an opportunity in its own right. This would allow the writers a chance to really dive a little bit more into how the team is doing without him. (For the time being, though, we remain hopeful that he will make it out of the premiere alive — can you imagine NCIS writing out another character after Abby’s exit and the death of Clayton Reeves?)
