How The Big Bang Theory – final season announcement came about

Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 19

There’s a chance now that you’ve had to digest the news that The Big Bang Theory is ending after season 12. Now, we’re getting a better sense as to how the decision came together.

Yesterday, we discussed both in an article and in a video (watch below, and be sure to subscribe for more) that the decision to end the show was that of longtime star Jim Parsons. This was a decision that apparently was first made at the end of last week, with him (per Deadline) informing executive producer Chuck Lorre of the news. There were attempts to get him to change his mind over the weekend, but they were to no avail and on Wednesday, he informed everyone else of his decision to leave after season 12. That was followed by Lorre announcing that season 12 would be the end.

Were there discussions about the series continuing? It does appear so, but they were mostly internal and they had not reached the level of the cast just yet. Many may have been interested in sticking around for more, but Lorre had always said that he did not want to continue the show without one of its original trio of Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco.

Now, the writers have to come together and figure out the right way to end this series after such a long run. It is sad to imagine CBS without one of its biggest comedies in decades, but the one bit of good news here is that the announcement of the final season is so early that everyone has plenty of time. Also, it doesn’t seem like Parsons’ decision had anything to do other than just him wanting to move on to do some other things and flex some other acting and produces muscles. Twelve years is a long time to do any one thing, so it’s really quite hard to blame him.

Yet, all of this information does explain the suddenness of the announcement, especially since there were some interested parties previously in keeping the show going.
