Harlots season 3 renewal: Should it happen on Hulu?

Following today’s finale officially arriving on Hulu, should a Harlots season 3 renewal happen? It’s a simple question with a fairly complicated answer.

For example, the performance of Harlots (which stars Samantha Morton, Jessica Brown Findlay, Liv Tyler, and others) is not just limited to how it performs on Hulu. The period drama is a co-production with the UK, so its performance there is also going to play a key role in whether or not comes back. Unfortunately, with it being Hulu, there are no official numbers out there when it comes to its stateside performance … so we have to look at some other ways to get some more information.

Take, for example, the show’s social-media footprint. The Hulu account for the series has over 3,000 followers, which isn’t enormous by any means; yet, some of its tweets have generated some traction and there is a fan community that is out there for the show. With that, we do think that there is an eagerness to get a little bit more of the series if it manages to come back for more.

As for whether or not it does, a lot of that may just have to do with whether or not Hulu and the show’s overseas partners are willing to commit more to the series. As of right now we would describe Harlots as a modest hit at best, mostly just because there are not a good many people out there who are all that familiar with the show. It doesn’t always generate a great deal of attention for itself, but in part that’s because it hasn’t received that much support just yet — especially stateside, where we suspect there are many who don’t even know the series exists.

Hopefully, a decision about a Harlots season 3 will be announced in the coming months. For now, we consider it to be on the bubble.
