The Affair enters season 5 on solid ratings note

The Affair -

Even though The Affair season 5 is not going to be airing on Showtime until next year at the earliest, we at least know now that the ratings are being left off in a good spot.

Sunday night’s new episode, which contained both the funeral for Alison alongside Helen doing what she could to prepare for Vik’s seemingly-inevitable death, ended up posting more than 560,000 live+same-day total. That is fairly impressive total for this season and while it didn’t smash any ratings records, this is the second-biggest episode of the entire season in total viewers. The most-watched episode was, understandably, the episode that featured Alison’s death via two different stories.

In general, the ratings for the fourth season were down fairly dramatically from what they were during the third season, but there are some different things to think about here. For one, we’re talking first and foremost here about live numbers — it’s certainly possible that there are just more viewers watching via DVR this season. Also, it’s been a really long time since the third season aired and that one was somewhat polarizing. It may be harder to get viewers on board after that season but for those who chose to came back, we do think that they found quite a wonderful gift waiting for them.

Ultimately, the ratings don’t matter as much given that season 5 is going to be the final season. Yet, we do still want to see the show go out on a winning note and with an audience that is very much indicative of the series’ overall greatness. We do think that some of these numbers are a nice start, but let’s hope for some more gains moving into season 5.
