Supergirl season 4: Bruce Boxleitner replacing Brent Spiner

Supergirl season 3 episode 13

There is a recasting coming for Supergirl season 4, but in this case, it’s a fairly easy transition given that the character hasn’t appeared onscreen yet.

Actor Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5) is coming on board the CW series as the new Vice President, and is replacing Brent Spiner, who had played the role previously. Spiner is leaving, per TVLine, due to family issues related to the show’s production schedule. This Vice President character is going to be an enormous presence coming up this season, mostly because this is a man who is going to be trying his best to step up for the country when they need him. The situation will be dire, and all of the nation’s eyes are going to be on him.

Supergirl has mentioned politics more than any other show in the Arrowverse to date, albeit not in a super-partisan way. After all, they’ve already had Lynda Carter on board the series in the role of President Marsdin, who has been used as an inspirational figure in the past. We don’t think that Supergirl is really angling to paint politics as a super-divisive or frustrating thing. Instead, the sentiment that we have seen over the past few seasons is that the show is trying to set up a world that is hopeful, even if there are conflicts and struggles that everyone is going to be forced to deal with. Expect some more twists and surprises to come in the weeks ahead, as we don’t suspect the story with the Vice President is going to follow a straight line. This recasting is proof of that.

Given that the new season of Supergirl hasn’t premiered yet, there’s a good chance that they will just go back and reshoot any of the sequences that they have done with Spiner, provided that any footage with him is already in the can.
