Shades of Blue season 4 renewal: Why isn’t it happening at NBC?

Shades of Blue

Going into tonight’s finale, we do have to pose the question: Why isn’t a Shades of Blue season 4 renewal happening at NBC?

At the end of the episode, we imagine that there are going to be plenty of people asking that question, especially if you haven’t heard the headlines over the past few months. In the end, though, the reasoning is actually rather clear as to why we aren’t getting more episodes of the Jennifer Lopez series. This isn’t an issue of the ratings, nor is it anything that has to do with the reception to the show. Instead, it’s mostly just due to some people behind the scenes, including Lopez, deciding that she wants to move forward. Her feeling, which you can read more about over here, is just that the story has reached a natural endpoint. It has told a story of police corruption and a woman trying to navigate one of the most difficult periods of her entire life.

At some point, it just makes sense for the story to reach some sort of conclusion — or, at the very least, a breather. These characters’ lives cannot be on the road to hell forever, right?

Yet, while the series is ending for now, that doesn’t mean that the show is officially done forever. We do think it’s best to treat the episode tonight as the final one for the series; yet, at the same time, there’s always a chance that something could happen later if the story is right and if both NBC / the series’ producers (including Lopez) decide that there is something more that they want to do. We’re not holding out hope for that, but there is absolutely something more that could be on the table for the series moving more into the future.
