The Alienist season 2 lives in the form of The Angel of Darkness

For those of you who really enjoyed The Alienist during its run on TNT, the story today has to be music to your ears. Today, the network announced that they have picked up The Angel of Darkness, a sequel to the original limited series that aired earlier this year. This is based on the work from Caleb Carr, the original series author, and it will feature Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning reprising their roles from the first version of the show. (We believe that the new limited series will be called The Angel of Darkness rather than The Alienist season 2.)

As for why TNT would want to continue the story for some of these characters, that isn’t all that hard to figure out. The original The Alienist proved to be a huge success story over at TNT, drawing some enormous ratings and critical acclaim to go along with it — including Emmy nominations. This has been one of the most critical and commercially-successful series for the network in quite some time, so finding some way in which for them to continue it had to be a no-brainer.

In a statement confirming this news, the network’s executive vice president of original programming Sarah Aubrey had the following to say, per Deadline:

“We could not be prouder of The Alienist’s outstanding, award-worthy performance and all of the work the incredible actors and crew put in to bring that story and time period to life. Our audience fell in love with these multi-dimensional, timeless characters and the journey of their struggles living in complicated times. With this new story in TNT’s Suspense Collection, we will further immerse viewers into their world as they are confronted with a new enemy.”

Given that this is just being given the green light now, we cannot imagine this being ready for at least another year, if not longer. Basically, if you loved the original The Alienist, we would advice you to be patient — this is going to take a whole.
