Shades of Blue season 4: Jennifer Lopez not ruling it out down the road
Yet, we don’t see Lopez necessarily ruling out a return to this character down the road. That is something that she discussed more to Entertainment Weekly leading up to the finale:
“We finished [shooting Blue] last season, and where she winds up is so tragically, poetically Harlee. It’s perfect … This is where it needs to be, and this is the end of that journey. Whether she’ll come back or not for some special or for another season, who knows, but for right now this is what happens for her. It’s a tragic ending, but really poetic and beautiful.”
Given that Lopez talks about another potential season down the road, it does make you think that Harlee probably survives the series … but we’re not sure about any of the other major characters.
One of the big challenges about a new Shades of Blue season would be getting NBC or another network on board, and then you have to reassemble as much of the cast as possible. That would be a challenge, especially since Sarah Jeffrey (who plays Harlee’s daughter Cristina) is one of the stars of The CW’s Charmed revival. Ultimately, though, we think that the cast and crew can better cross this bridge when they come to it.
For us, we’d almost rather see Lopez do something funnier and sillier for the next couple of years if she wants to get back to TV; after doing a series this dramatic for the past few years, doesn’t she deserve a break to do something different?

In follow up interviews with Ray Liotta after the news from NBC that the series had been cancelled, it is no wonder that Liotta and the cast were surprised about the series ending. The finale was clearly written to extend the story out further, if needed, with or without Harlee. I enjoyed this show, but the finale was somewhat a let down. There was too much wrapped up too quickly. If the producers really wanted to end it, at least a two-part finale was needed in order to close out so many loose ends instead of all those one line sentence explanations for just about everything. The Ramsey killing scenario was rushed in order to get that off the checklist as well. The prison twist allows her to come back, at later time, via parole while she serves time off screen or she comes back at the start of a new season as part of a multi episode arc inside prison before her release.
However, in the rush to finish the story, a lot of unanswered questions still remain:
– There were no details given on Harlee’s plea deal. Woz told her that the whole district submitted character witness statements for her.
– The Deputy Commissioner of Internal Affairs was more than just a mole, but rather some kind of crime boss. She sanctioned cops killing cops. Did she go down with Ramsey or was she able to escape charges? What happened to Verco after what he did to get the hearing scheduled?
– After his conversation with the cartel spokesman, what kind of deal did Woz make with them? Is he now their new contact in the NYPD?
– There was never any reconciliation or even a conversation between Woz and his son, Nate given all the ongoing angst between them.
– Harlee put herself behind bars to save her crew and take down the corrupt Intelligence Unit, but her boss does a strangulation killing under police cover and he walks away without any consequences. “Hey, you got a psycho loose back here”.
