Outlander season 4: How to craft the Young Ian – Rollo storyline
Of course, moving into season 4 this fall there’s another fun friendship that is worth a little bit of attention: One between a man and his dog. Earlier today, Entertainment Weekly posted some new photos of Young Ian (John Bello) with Rollo, his beloved dog who becomes a companion for him in America. He’s valuable to this character’s development in so many ways, especially when you think about where Young Ian is at entering this season. This is someone who just went through a horrifying, abusive, and near-death experience. He was captured and stuck in a terrible environment aboard the ship … and that is before we even got around to him meeting Geillis Duncan.

We do think that Outlander will play a number of the scenes between Young Ian and Rollo as lighthearted, which they should given that Ian is mostly a comedic character who brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the show. We want to see the two getting into some trouble together but also them establishing a real sense of identity and purpose in America. Rollo can certainly communicate, even if he doesn’t have dialogue in the same way as most other characters. We’d also just love to see him serve as a sort of comfort, support, and strength for Young Ian. The world that these characters live in is fairly dangerous, and with that, you can’t spend a whole lot of time dwelling on what happened. You have to move forward, and for Young Ian maybe Rollo helps with that.
Of course, we admit that we’re more biased to love Rollo than anyone — we love dogs and have pretty much our entire lives.
