Star Trek: Discovery casts Spock; Castle Rock renewed; new Kerry Washington series (Quick Hits)

Star Trek: Discovery premiere

Let’s kick off today’s edition of Quick Hits with some Star Trek: Discovery news that is certainly going to leave a number of people rather excited: The series has now found its Spock!

Today, CBS All Access announced that Ethan Peck (10 Things I Hate About You) has been brought on board to play the new version of the iconic character, who has been portrayed in the past by Leonard Nimoy and also Zachary Quinto. In a statement, showrunner Alex Kurtzman had the following to say on the subject:

“We searched for months for an actor who would, like [Nimoy and Quinto], bring his own interpretation to the role … An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.”

Fun fact: Ethan Peck is the grandson of Gregory Peck.

As for some other news of the day…

Castle Rock renewed – Hulu is not going to make you wait any longer — they are bringing back the thriller for another season. Given that Castle Rock was devised as an anthology series, this would mean in theory that the second batch of episodes would be about a completely new story with new characters. Whether or not we end up seeing the same cast back for more remains to be seen.

New Kerry Washington series – The Scandal star is continuing to find new projects for herself (which is not surprising since she’s pretty incredible). Next up for her is the limited series Little Fires Everywhere, which she is also executive-producing. On the other side of that, though, THR reports that Washington is also going to star in and executive-produce Old City Blues for the aforementioned streaming service. This series is based on a comic story regarding the futuristic city of New Greece and the people who work to stop high-tech crime.
