Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks Laura Ingraham, Lithuania in opening

Last Week Tonight

At the start of this week’s edition of Last Week Tonight with John Oliverthe series’ host was quick to discuss Laura Ingraham. In particular, he went her recent monologue and the backlash that went along with it … including almost some praise that came her way via David Duke. As Oliver points out, that’s one of the last people you want to be praised by — kind of like Dr. Larry Nassar, to use the host’s own analogy.

If there is a problem with opening the show with this sort of segment, it’s likely this — it’s still giving publicity to Ingraham and her remarks. It’s kind of like in the aftermath of the “shut up and dribble” comments made towards LeBron James, she then tried to get him on her show. Why? Think in terms of ratings.

After taking Ingraham to task, Oliver then went into a story that you may not have heard about previously, and that was the feud between Saudi Arabia and Canada. This is actually an important story for a number of different reasons. Not only was Justin Trudeau’s response striking, but so was an ad that came out via Saudi Arabia.

Then, we went into Lithuania, which really has to be one of the most absurd segments we’ve seen in some time. Basically, Oliver had some fun at the expense at a local city proclaiming itself to be the “g-spot of Europe” … which shockingly is a true story. With that, he came up with a few nicknames for some other cities all over the world — with many of them featuring the same innuendo front and center.

Over all, this is a pretty solid open to the show, mostly because it combined a story that you have probably heard about and then a few others that you may not have heard about at all.
