Fear the Walking Dead season 4 episode 9 review: In the storm

Fear the Walking Dead

Tonight, Fear the Walking Dead season 4 episode 9 came on the air with one of the hardest possible tasks: Trying to follow up the death of Madison. Most of the characters on this show now are new to the world — we don’t know them and don’t have all that much of an attachment.

Yet, we also knew that the first half of the season was great and that did help to at elevate expectations somewhat for what would be coming on the other side.

Tonight’s episode featured what was a relatively-muted color palette, something that was likely meant to be a reflection of cloud cover and some of the storms that are coming up. As for some of the stories tonight, one of the primary ones revolved around John Dorie trying to recruit Strand for a search, while at the same time Alicia and Morgan found themselves paired up and off on a mission themselves. We like the dynamic that these two characters have, especially when it comes to introducing the idea of Alicia eventually getting to meet some of the characters in Alexandria.

As for how Alicia is mourning the loss of Madison, much of it comes and goes. Tonight, she found herself mourning her mother just in her capacity to help other people — it was a measuring stick that was in many ways intimidating and hard for her to reach up to.

The big discovery

For most of the episode, the big narrative push was trying to understand why an influx of walker bodies was coming from upstream. This, and some supplies that were uncovered, were foreshadowing for some of the events that are coming. We know that there are new characters coming beyond just the storm, but we are left to wonder whether we really need them .. or if this show would just be better off focusing on allowing us to get to know the people that we have already.

CarterMatt Verdict

Fear the Walking Dead remains a good show, but we can’t help raising the question after watching tonight’s episode as to whether or not the writers would have been better off just creating a new show rather than injecting so many new faces into this one.

As for the suggestions of a crossover, which Morgan has mentioned on a couple of occasions now with his desire to return to Alexandria, it’s mostly intriguing just because of Alicia and Victor Strand at the moment. We like John Dorie, but nobody else has been established enough as of yet.
