Vikings season 5: How Travis Fimmel could return for one last send-off

We’re gearing up for the second half of Vikings season 5 to premiere on History this November, and with that, we have a little bit of time to speculate about what we want to see.

Within the world of this show, one thing has been proven very clear: People are going to die. That’s just a part of the show and we really have to be used to it at this point. Yet, we still reserve the right to miss characters deeply after they go and Ragnar is pretty high up on that list. Travis Fimmel played the character so beautifully for so many seasons until we had to say goodbye. He was the engine that really drove everything leading up to what’s been going on as of late with Ivar, Lagertha, and the rest of his sons and while he may be gone, the world lives on through his family – even though his sons are at war and he would not be happy about that!

Trying to bring back a dead character is obviously not an easy thing to do. Vikings isn’t the sort of show that is riddled with flashbacks, and given that we spent so much time in a world in which Ragnar was alive, there may not be all that much of an interest in going back to that point now.

Yet, there is still a way in which they could bring him back that would be both different and exciting — in Valhalla, the afterlife for people of Norse cultural. Based on the prophecy that is out there, at some point in this series, Lagertha is going to die. Maybe it’s this season, maybe it is season 6, or maybe it is at some other point down the road. No matter when it is, it’s fairly hard to imagine this character making through the remainder of the series alive. With that in mind, we do think that there’s an opportunity with her death to bring back Fimmel for one last appearance as the two set off into the afterlife together.

Although we haven’t really seen Valhalla we know that this is where every Viking warrior wants to go and that Lagertha would certainly be welcomed there when she goes, but even if we don’t ever get to see it, there would be something really special to tie these two back together again if he was there to lead her to the next part of her life. Although Ragnar messed up his relationship with her by stepping out with Aslaug she never stopped being the love of his life and as much as we wanted to see them reunited as a couple, that never really happened. This would be a nice end/new beginning for them that we would love to see.

If you lose a character as epic as we consider Lagertha to be, we personally believe that there is something epic you need to do in order to send her off. Bringing back Fimmel for one last appearance brings the series full-circle, allows for a more emotional conclusion, and gives us a sense that, even in this war-turned and violent world, everything will somehow be okay. For Lagertha who has certainly been unlucky in love, it would be nice to see her have this win.
