Apparently, there was a chance at one point for Sara Ramirez to return to Grey’s Anatomy for Arizona’s farewell — it just didn’t happen.
Speaking in a new Instagram Story, show creator Shonda Rhimes noted that the production for the ABC series “tried” to get Ramirez back for an episode, which TVLine claims was the season 14 finale. However, it didn’t happen because CBS didn’t authorize it. Because she is a series regular over on Madam Secretary, the network has to give their approval for any appearance an actor makes on another show. There could have been scheduling or logistical reasons behind it (Madam Secretary films on the other side of the country from Grey’s Anatomy), but CBS hasn’t commented on the story at the moment.
Even though it would have been nice to see Ramirez back on the show for this episode, the writers did find a way to include at least a text-message conversation between Callie and Arizona that seemed to strongly indicate that the two characters will be getting together down the road. We’re sure that for many people out there, that at least offered some closure, but it would’ve been so much better to actually see her.
For many fans out there, Callie and Arizona were the relationship that they wanted to see work out the most. They were in love for so long and they were one of the best examples of a stable LGBTQ relationship on television. Having them find their way back to each other is a nice way for the series to come full-circle. (We do still like to think that the two characters are off somewhere happy now.)
Grey’s Anatomy season 15 is premiering on ABC a little bit later this year and based on some of the teasers that are out there, love is going to be the general theme for what lies ahead.
