Reverie season 2 renewal hopes, expectations for Sarah Shahi – NBC series

Reverie

Should a Reverie season 2 renewal happen on NBC? It’s a question you may be wondering during tonight’s finale.

On the surface, it’s pretty easy to make a case for it to happen — this was one of the more imaginative series of the summer, and now that the writers/producers have had an opportunity to see viewer reactions to the story, they would be able to come back and make a season 2 that is even stronger. The first season was filmed without any such feedback, and they likely have a better understanding now of what to do moving forward to raise the bar.

Unfortunately, the big problem here comes via the ratings. Maybe had Reverie aired on a different night or with a different lead-in, the series could have performed better. While it did a decent job of retaining at least two-thirds of its live premiere audience most of the summer, its premiere audience was never altogether big in the first place. We’re talking here about a series that generated a 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic right out of the gate, and most recent episodes have hovered around a 0.4. We’re not sure that this will be enough for NBC given the amount of special effects that are needed for this series, even with it coming in part from the in-house Universal Television studio.

Yet, there are some other variables that NBC could weigh when it comes to determining the future of Reverie. One of the biggest ones is whether or not they like the DVR and streaming numbers, and if they feel like they can make this one of those hits that is easily binge-watched over the course of the next several months to build that audience going into season 2 – kind of like the momentum Breaking Bad built the same way. We’re at a point now where many networks often think about other things when making these decisions for the future, especially when ratings expectations for many shows are lower and there is an influx of more competition than ever before.

Hopefully, we’re going to learn about a Reverie season 2 renewal at some point this fall — NBC may need to make a decision by then if they want the show back next summer.
