Queen Sugar renewed for season 4 on OWN with new showrunner

Queen Sugar

OWN isn’t going to make Queen Sugar fans wait any longer to hear the good news — the drama series will be back for more!

Today, the cable network made the big announcement that the series, (which is executive-produced by Ava DuVernay) is going to be coming back for another batch of episodes with writer / co-executive producer Anthony Sparks promoted to showrunner. This is a series that does like to have a constant influx of new creative ideas, as well as giving opportunities to people who have never held the position before. (News of the renewal first came out via Deadline.)

In a statement, the network’s president Erik Logan had the following to say about the renewal coming in:

“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today … We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”

The ratings for season 3 were somewhat down from season 2, but really the biggest selling point for Queen Sugar as a series has to deal with its runaway success on social media. The vast majority of episodes trend worldwide on Twitter and it has an active social community like no other. This is the sort of free marketing that most networks would beg to have — it eases things from a marketing standpoint and raises curiosity about what the show is all about from people who may not have heard of it. It’s hard to necessarily quantify its impact on the ratings, but we know that it certainly doesn’t hurt.

The finale for Queen Sugar season 3 is slated to air at some point this August on the network.
