The Conners spoilers: What will subject matter be for Roseanne spin-off

ABC 2018 Fall Schedule

Today, ABC head Channing Dungey took to the stage in order to discuss a number of things at the TCA Summer Press Tour — and that included The ConnersThis is the network’s attempt to move the show forward without Roseanne Barr and that’s a struggle, mostly because her specter will hover over the remainder of the series. (Whether or not she live-tweets about it is something that remains to be seen.)

While we have to take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to the actual quality of the new series, we can say that content-wise, it’s going to be largely the same thing that you’ve seen before. Per Deadline, here is what Channing Dungey had to say on the subject:

“What I can tell you us that thematically we will be focusing on a lot of the same themes that we were in the first nine episodes [of Roseanne season 10] — what it’s like today for a family to make ends meet in a world where they might be going into foreclosure, where work is scarce, where there are a lot of different challenges in terms of raising children as a single parent. All these issues are going to still be at the forefront.”

One of the larger focuses of The Conners is going to be on Sara Gilbert’s character, though John Goodman and others are going to be reprising a number of their own roles from the past season of the show, as well. The series starts off this October, and the hope is that somehow, they can capture at least a good chunk of attention that Roseanne had when it premiered — that season generated enormous ratings and led to other networks considering other revivals, including Fox and Last Man Standing (which aired previously on ABC).
