Batwoman casts Ruby Rose for Arrowverse spin-off, potential series

The CW has officially cast its Batwoman, and in doing so they have found a higher-profile performer than we expected in Ruby Rose.

Today, it was confirmed that the Orange is the New Black and Pitch Perfect alum is going to play the role of Kate Kane, a woman with a troubled past who eventually dons the Batwoman mask and vows to fight crime in the best way she knows how — while also fighting her own demons. The character is also an out lesbian, and we know that the CW and Warner Bros. TV were looking for an LGBT actress to take on the role and Rose is a part of the community.

This character is going to first make an appearance on the upcoming Arrowverse crossover a little bit later this year before potentially leading the way in her own original series executive-produced by Caroline Dries. We know that getting this casting right was the most important thing and we do think that Rose has some of the dramatic chops to pull it off. She doesn’t necessarily resemble Batwoman in the comics in a physical sense, but that is something that can of course be worked on. (A little bit of hair dye could go a long way there.)

If Batwoman does eventually get the green light, that would mean that The CW would have six traditional superhero TV shows within their family. (If you count iZombie, they have even more comic-book shows in general.) Batwoman would be the fifth show to officially enter the Arrowverse. While Black Lightning has danced around the possibility, there has yet to be any formal crossover with it or the other shows — Supergirl has been referenced on it, but that feels more like an Easter egg than anything else. If this series happens, it’s not going to come on the air until at least 2019 at the earliest.
