Last Week Tonight with John Oliver takes on Paul Manafort, Donald Trump Jr.

Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver once again entered its broadcast tonight with all sorts of potential to discuss many different things.

Let’s begin tonight with, of course, the latest on the Trump Administration, including the President’s response to headlines around the Trump Tower meeting and his son, Donald Trump Jr.’s involved in it. Beyond just this, there was also a discussion about the Paul Manafort trial. Of course, Oliver took on some of the comparisons that Trump made to Al Capone.

As if this was not enough, Oliver (of course) went into some of the extravagant things that Manafort has spent money on, whether it be an elaborate floral arrangement at his Hamptons home or some ridiculous clothing that her purchased.

What was the point of all of this? Mostly, it was an intent to showcase Manafort as someone with a history of being incredibly greedy and had no real sense of what money means. The thing that Oliver also brought up was the attempt by Fox News to discredit some of the charges that Manaford was facing, at least in relation to the 2016 Presidential Election. Oliver dug a little bit deeper here and, in the process of that, potentially started to show some connections that potentially are there … but can’t really say out loud for … well, reasons.

Basically, this was just a way to further show some incompetence in the way in which certainly parts of the media are covering Manafort’s trial, and some concerns that the President has as a whole. There was humor here, but at the same time we’ve also seen stronger and more explosive openings on Last Week Tonight before. This segment was also fairly short, which mostly was so Oliver could segue into a discussion of criminal justice for the remainder of the episode.
