Hawaii Five-0 season 9 remaking classic episode for 50th anniversary
At TCA today (see the tweet below via Jim Colucci) it was officially confirmed that the season will open with an effective remake of “Cocoon,” the original pilot of the series 50 years ago. This is a pretty cool way to honor the original show, and also update this episode for a modern audience.
Obviously, it says a lot about the Hawaii Five-0 brand that it has been able to persevere for fifty years, even if there was a pretty substantial gap in the middle. It does also say quite a bit about the current CBS show that it made it to a season 9. It’s so hard these days to get a new show past the fourth or fifth season just because there are so many different options for viewers that are out there. You need to have a solid concept from the start, likable cast members, and then ways to be able to constantly change the game. If you do manage to pull all of this off, then at the end of the day you may have a reason to celebrate.
So is this something that we think Hawaii Five-0 could do a little bit more of in the future? We don’t necessarily think it’s a priority since aside from remaking episodes, it feels like the show has done plenty of other stuff already to honor the original legacy of the show. We just hope that the writers have some cool stories in general this season that are character-focused and different than anything that we’ve had a chance to see before.
Hawaii Five-0 season 9 premieres on CBS on Friday, September 28.
