The Big Bang Theory season 13 renewal still possible at CBS

The Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 2

At the moment, it does not appear like CBS is approaching The Big Bang Theory season 12 as the final one for the show. As a matter of fact, there’s a chance that a season 13 could still be possible.

Speaking to critics at the TCA Summer Press Tour this morning, the network’s programming head Kelly Kahl made it clear that there are some discussions about potentially bringing the series back following claims that season 12 could be the last one. It certainly makes sense as to why the network would want more — despite the enormous salaries that it pays the entirety of its cast at this point, it remains an immensely popular show both in America and all over the world. We are now in an era where sitcoms are over-saturated and there aren’t really any that deliver enormous ratings; The Big Bang Theory is one of the few exceptions. It’s a huge launching pad for the network that helps other shows in addition to drawing big numbers itself.

We do think that there is a relative sense of urgency when it comes to getting a deal done. We think that by the end of this year, CBS needs to know whether or not season 12 is the last so that the writers and producers can move forward actually giving the show a chance to say a proper goodbye. You don’t want a series finale to come out of thin air.

The biggest challenge that we see with a season 13 is simply this: What more story is there left to tell? Leonard and Penny, Howard and Bernadette, and Sheldon and Amy are all married. They’ve got so much that they could’ve possibly ever wanted out of their lives. Raj’s journey is still an interesting one to follow, but the show can’t just focus on explicitly him. Maybe if the series focuses more on the characters’ careers there is something more to dive into — the comedy will obviously be there regardless, but there does still need to be a larger narrative engine keeping the show going.
